On May 15, The City of Bartlett modified the traffic signal at Yale Road and Brother Blvd to improve safety for pedestrians and greenway users. A traffic crash involving a young bicyclist using the pedestrian signal to cross Yale Road in the crosswalk occurred with a vehicle making a turn through the crosswalk. The driver did not see the child in the crosswalk nor notice the pedestrian signal was active. After the improvements, when the pedestrian signal is activated to cross Yale Road, all vehicular phases of the traffic signal will have a red light for the duration of the pedestrian phase, so that no left turns on green are permitted through the crosswalk. In addition, new overhead signs will also be activated with the pedestrian signal, prohibiting right turns on red. Right turns on red and left turns on a permissive green phase will continue to be allowed when the pedestrian signal is not active.
